The Apache Trail
It’s officially known as AZ 88 and it links Apache Junction at the edge of the Greater Phoenix area with Globe by way of Theodore Roosevelt Lake – the Superstition Mountains and the Tonto National Forest. This scenic slice of the southwest is 40 miles – mostly unpaved – of twisted igneous mountains covered with dense forests of saguaro (sa-wa-roe) and ferrocactus accented by several deep blue lakes. Past the lakes, the trail becomes more traditional as it winds into the former copper mining town of Globe. As you retrace their steps along the route you can almost see the cunning Apache* warriors planning their next move. *(Named by a combination of Yuma and Zuni words. Yuma -“fighting men” and Zuni - “enemy”).

U.S. 60 east all the way to Apache Junction to the cutoff for AZ88/Idaho Road. AZ 88 is the Apache Trail
